This is the oldest and best-known Jain temple in the capital, standing opposite the Red Fort at the head of Chandni Chowk. Built largely of red sandstone that gives it the name red temple, it dates in its present form from the early nineteenth century, though a shrine has occupied the site since the seventeenth. Its ornate interior is decorated with gilded and painted shrines dedicated to the Jain tirthankaras. The temple is also famous for running a charitable bird hospital in an adjoining building tending injured birds.
