This memorial on the west bank of the Yamuna marks the site where Mahatma Gandhi was cremated in early 1948, the day after his assassination. A simple square platform of black marble carries an eternal flame and the inscription of his last words, set within a walled enclosure of lawns and trees. Visitors remove their shoes before approaching the sombre plinth, and heads of state often lay wreaths here during official visits. The surrounding park has since gathered memorials to several other national leaders.
