These are the ruins of Firozabad, the fortified capital founded in the mid-fourteenth century by Sultan Firuz Shah Tughlaq beside the Yamuna. The most striking feature is a polished sandstone pillar of Emperor Ashoka, brought from far away and mounted atop a stepped pyramidal structure within the citadel. Around it lie the remains of a mosque, a stepwell and the palace enclosure, in the austere rubble masonry typical of the Tughlaq period. Visitors come to see the ancient inscribed column.
