A limestone massif 13 kilometres north of Kuala Lumpur, Batu Caves contains a series of caverns used as Hindu shrines since the late nineteenth century. The main Cathedral Cave is accessed via a flight of 272 coloured steps past a 42.7-metre gilt statue of the deity Murugan, one of the largest statues of a Hindu deity in the world. The site hosts the Thaipusam festival each January, drawing over a million devotees.
