Kampung Baru is a Malay urban village established in the late nineteenth century in the centre of Kuala Lumpur, set aside as agricultural settlement land for the Malay community amid the growing colonial town. It preserves timber stilt houses, small mosques and traditional food stalls on lanes that contrast sharply with the surrounding towers, including the nearby Petronas skyscrapers visible above the rooftops. Visitors come especially in the evenings for the open-air night market.
