The national palace of Malaysia is the official residence of the elected king, or Yang di-Pertuan Agong. Opened in 2011 on a hillside site in Kuala Lumpur, it replaced an older palace and features a cluster of golden domes above cream-coloured walls in a modern Islamic idiom. The forecourt, guarded by mounted and foot sentries, is a popular spot for photographs, though the interior is closed. Landscaped grounds and a ceremonial gate front the road, offering a view of the changing of the guard.
