Merdeka Square is the ceremonial heart of Kuala Lumpur, an expansive grassed ground bordered by grand colonial and Moorish-revival architecture. Once the padang used for colonial sport and gatherings, it was here that Malaysia proclaimed its independence in 1957. A towering flagpole, ornamental fountains, and the landmark Sultan Abdul Samad Building surround the lawns, which still host national parades and countdowns. The square anchors a walkable heritage zone that includes museums, the old post office, and the riverside where the city began.
