The carved stone facade of a seventeenth-century Jesuit church that burned to its foundations in 1835 is the most recognized image of Macau. The five-story Renaissance-Baroque facade remains standing on a hillside above a broad stone staircase, depicting scenes from the life of the Virgin and early Christian martyrs in carved relief. The crypt beneath the terrace contains a small museum of sacred art and ossuary remains from early missionaries.
