A seventeenth-century Portuguese fortress crowning a hill above central Macau, built by the Jesuits to defend the settlement and famous for repelling a Dutch assault in 1622. Its thick stone ramparts, lined with old bronze cannon, enclose a grassy summit that offers panoramic views across the peninsula and the neighbouring church ruins. The plateau now shelters the Macau Museum within the historic walls, blending fortification with exhibition space. As part of the World Heritage centre, it links the city's military and religious past.
