The oldest temple in Macau, predating the Portuguese settlement and dedicated to the sea goddess Mazu, whose name is thought to have given the territory its European name. Set into a rocky hillside near the inner harbour, it climbs through a series of pavilions, prayer halls, and boulder-strewn courtyards scented with coiled incense. Stone inscriptions and a carved relief of a junk record centuries of maritime worship by fishermen and traders. It forms part of the historic centre of Macau inscribed as a World Heritage Site.
