The paved civic heart of old Macau, ringed by pastel Portuguese-colonial buildings and floored with a wave-patterned mosaic of black-and-white calçada stone. The triangular square has served as the town's forum since the sixteenth century, framed by the former Senate building, a baroque church, and the charitable Holy House of Mercy. A central fountain and festive lantern displays make it a focal point for celebrations. Part of the World Heritage historic centre, it channels visitors toward the ruins of the city's most famous church.
