A neoclassical playhouse in the old town of Macau, opened in 1860 as the first Western-style theatre in China and named for a Portuguese king. Its green-shuttered facade with an Ionic portico faces a small tree-shaded square lined with historic colonial buildings. The intimate horseshoe auditorium still hosts concerts and performances, and the theatre served the Macanese community as a social and cultural hub for generations. As part of the World Heritage centre, it represents the introduction of European performing arts to the region.
