One of Macau's largest and most historic temples, dedicated to the Buddhist goddess of mercy and set amid a series of ornate halls and terraced gardens. Founded centuries ago and rebuilt in the seventeenth century, it is celebrated as the place where the first treaty between China and the United States was signed at a stone table in its garden in 1844. Its roof ridges bristle with porcelain figures, and inner shrines hold gilded statues and antique carvings. Bonsai gardens and lotus ponds surround the quiet courtyards.
