Portugal administered Macao from the mid-16th century until 1999, and few places on Earth record so long an encounter between China and the West. Along its historic streets, Chinese shrines and merchant houses stand beside baroque churches, a hilltop fortress and China's oldest lighthouse — a whole quarter shaped by two building cultures learning from each other across four centuries of trade. UNESCO inscribed the Historic Centre of Macao in 2005.
