A triangular ceremonial square in downtown Ottawa, this space sits between Parliament Hill and the Rideau Canal and centers on the National War Memorial. Unveiled in 1939, the towering granite arch and bronze figures commemorate the nation's war dead, and the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier lies at its base. The square hosts the annual Remembrance Day service that draws large crowds each November. Surrounded by the Château Laurier hotel, the arts center and government buildings, it is one of the capital's principal civic spaces.
