The National Arts Centre in Ottawa is Canada's flagship bilingual performing arts institution, opened in 1969 beside the Rideau Canal in a distinctive hexagonal modernist building. It houses several halls staging orchestra, opera, dance, and English and French theatre, and is home to the National Arts Centre Orchestra. A major glass-fronted expansion added a bright new entrance overlooking the canal and Confederation Square. It presents a broad national programme and champions Indigenous and Canadian work.
