The National War Memorial stands in Confederation Square in downtown Ottawa, a granite arch surmounted by bronze figures of soldiers advancing through it, unveiled in 1939 to honour the dead of the First World War. Later rededicated to all who served in later conflicts, it forms the focus of the country's annual Remembrance Day ceremonies. At its base lies the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, guarded ceremonially through the warmer months. The soaring arch anchors the ceremonial route between Parliament Hill and the wider downtown core.
