Standing on Elgin Street in downtown Ottawa, this monument celebrates the principles of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. Designed by Melvin Charney and unveiled in 1990 by the Dalai Lama, it takes the form of a stylized concrete gateway and colonnade with elevated figures. The words "equality" and "dignity" appear in dozens of languages, including many Indigenous ones, carved into the structure. Conceived as a public forum, it has become a gathering point for demonstrations and vigils in the capital.
