Major's Hill Park is the oldest park in Ottawa, laid out on a bluff overlooking the Ottawa River, the Rideau Canal locks and the Parliament buildings across the water. Established in the nineteenth century near the site of the canal builder's former residence, it offers one of the finest viewpoints in the capital. The park hosts festivals and Canada Day celebrations, and a cannon is fired daily at noon. Statues, gardens and open lawns make it a central gathering place beside the National Gallery.
