This Romanesque Revival landmark on Pennsylvania Avenue, completed in 1899, is crowned by a clock tower that remains one of the tallest habitable structures in the city. Once the headquarters of the U.S. Post Office Department, it narrowly escaped demolition and was later converted into a hotel around a glass-roofed courtyard. The observation deck near the top of the tower offers panoramic views and houses bells commemorating American independence.
