The Shakespeare Theatre Company is Washington's leading classical theatre, renowned for productions of Shakespeare and other great playwrights. It performs mainly at two downtown venues, the Sidney Harman Hall and the older Lansburgh Theatre, in the city's Penn Quarter. Founded in its modern form in the 1980s, it has earned national recognition for the quality of its classical staging and its educational programmes.
