This Smithsonian museum on the National Mall documents the social, political, cultural, and technological history of the United States. Opened in 1964, it holds around three million objects, from the original Star-Spangled Banner that inspired the national anthem to Julia Child's kitchen and the ruby slippers from The Wizard of Oz. Visitors move through galleries on democracy, transportation, money, and everyday life across three main floors. Its marble exterior and central flag hall anchor the eastern Mall.
