Part of the Smithsonian's National Museum of Asian Art, the Sackler Gallery sits mostly underground beside the Mall, connected to its sister Freer Gallery. It opened in 1987 with a founding gift of Asian art and now presents rotating exhibitions of Chinese, South Asian, Islamic, and ancient Near Eastern works. Visitors descend through a granite pavilion into subterranean galleries lit from above. Ceramics, sculpture, manuscripts, and contemporary Asian art appear throughout.
