The Freer Gallery, opened in 1923, was the Smithsonian's first fine-arts museum and forms half of the National Museum of Asian Art. Founded on Charles Lang Freer's gift of Asian and American art, it is famous for the Peacock Room, a lavishly painted dining interior by James McNeill Whistler moved here intact. Galleries arranged around a serene courtyard display Chinese bronzes, Japanese screens, Korean ceramics, and Buddhist sculpture. The Italian Renaissance-style building's calm proportions suit its emphasis on contemplative viewing.
