This formal garden behind the Smithsonian Castle covers much of the roof of the underground museum complex that includes the Sackler and African Art galleries. Opened in 1987, it comprises several distinct sections, including an ornate parterre patterned after Victorian carpet bedding, a moongate garden with granite benches, and a fountain garden echoing Islamic design. Mature magnolias, seasonal plantings, and cast-iron urns fill the space between the Mall's grand buildings. It offers a quiet, structured retreat amid the busy museum corridor.
