Popularly known as the Castle, this red sandstone building is the original home and administrative center of the Smithsonian Institution. Completed in 1855 in a Norman Revival style bristling with towers and turrets, it stands out sharply against the classical architecture of the Mall. Inside, a visitor center orients guests to the many Smithsonian museums, and a crypt near the north entrance holds the remains of founding benefactor James Smithson.
