Kotagede is a historic district on the southeastern edge of Yogyakarta that was the first capital of the Mataram Sultanate in the late sixteenth century. Narrow lanes wind past old Javanese houses, a royal cemetery holding the tombs of Mataram's founders, and a mosque said to be among the oldest in the region. The area later became famous as a centre of silversmithing, and workshops still produce fine filigree jewellery sold in local shops. Its blend of royal history, traditional architecture and living craft makes it one of the city's.
