The Sonobudoyo Museum, near the northern square of Yogyakarta's palace, holds one of the finest collections of Javanese art and artefacts outside the royal court itself. Set in a building with a classical Javanese joglo roof, it displays wayang puppets, masks, kris daggers, gamelan instruments, batik, manuscripts and gold ornaments gathered from Java, Bali and Madura. It is also known for nightly shadow-puppet performances staged with a full gamelan orchestra.
