The Gedung Agung, a stately colonnaded palace in the heart of Yogyakarta, is one of the official state palaces of the Indonesian presidency. Built in the mid-nineteenth century as a residence for Dutch colonial officials, it briefly served as the seat of the young republic's government when Yogyakarta acted as the emergency capital during the independence struggle. Its white classical facade faces a major junction near the sultan's palace, and it still hosts state ceremonies and occasional public visits.
