A royal garden and bathing complex built in the mid-18th century within the grounds of the Yogyakarta Sultanate, Taman Sari served as a pleasure garden, meditation retreat, and defensive fortress for the sultan and his court. The surviving structures include elaborately carved bathing pools, underground tunnels, an aquatic castle, and a mosque with a distinctive domed meditation chamber. The complex fell into partial ruin after the Javanese War of 1825–1830 and was subsequently incorporated into a residential neighborhood of the Kraton area.
