Fort Vredeburg is a Dutch colonial fortress in the centre of Yogyakarta, built in the late eighteenth century opposite the sultan's palace to keep watch over the court. Its low ramparts, corner bastions and moat once housed a garrison, and the surrounding barracks now serve as a museum of the Indonesian independence struggle. Galleries filled with dioramas, weapons and photographs trace events from the colonial period through the revolution to the founding of the republic.
