The oldest and largest traditional market in Yogyakarta, this multi-storey bazaar on the city's main axis has traded since the eighteenth century near the sultan's palace. Its crowded floors sell batik textiles, herbal remedies, spices, snacks, produce and household goods, with the batik section drawing shoppers seeking the region's celebrated hand-dyed cloth. Its name evokes the banyan forest that once stood on the site, and it remains woven into the city's ceremonial life. A working market, not a tourist creation.
