The Cosmological Axis of Yogyakarta and its Historic Landmarks

Yogyakarta is a city built along an idea. In the 18th century Sultan Mangkubumi laid out a six-kilometre axis connecting the volcano Merapi with the Indian Ocean, the Kraton palace at its midpoint and cultural monuments strung to north and south, still linked by ritual. The line embodies Javanese beliefs about the cosmos and the cycles of life, and remains a working centre of government and tradition. UNESCO inscribed the Cosmological Axis in 2023.
