The Great Mosque of Mataram at Kotagede is regarded as one of the oldest mosques on Java, its origins tied to the founding of the Mataram Sultanate in the late sixteenth century. Set behind a walled compound with an old banyan tree at its gate, it combines a traditional multi-tiered Javanese roof with later additions. A royal cemetery adjoining the mosque holds the graves of Mataram's early rulers, guarded and visited by pilgrims who observe strict customs of dress and conduct.
