The main civic square of Thessaloniki, Aristotelous opens onto the seafront and forms the centrepiece of the city's rebuilt centre after the fire of 1917. Designed by the French architect Ernest Hébrard, its monumental curved facades and arcaded buildings frame a broad plaza that runs inland toward the upper town. Grand cafés and historic cinemas line the arcades, and a statue of Aristotle sits at one end. The square hosts festivals concerts and public gatherings.
