A covered market hall in the centre of Thessaloniki, Modiano was built in the 1920s to designs by the architect Eli Modiano and named for his family. Its glass-roofed central aisle is lined with stalls selling meat, fish, cheese, olives, spices and other foodstuffs, surrounded by tavernas and ouzo bars. The steel-and-glass structure stands on the site of a Jewish neighbourhood destroyed in the great fire and reflects the city's early 20th-century modernisation.
