Paleochristian and Byzantine Monuments of Thessalonika

Thessaloniki, founded in 315 BC, was among the earliest springboards for the spread of Christianity, and its churches read like a textbook spanning the 4th to the 15th century — Greek-cross plans, three-nave basilicas, and mosaics in the Rotunda and the churches of St Demetrius and St David that rank with the great works of early Christian art. The city's Paleochristian and Byzantine monuments were inscribed as UNESCO World Heritage in 1988.
