A tiny late 5th-century church in the Ano Poli quarter, Hosios David was originally the katholikon of the Latomos Monastery. It is renowned for a rare and exceptionally preserved apse mosaic showing a beardless Christ in a vision of the prophets, considered among the finest early Christian mosaics to survive anywhere. The modest brick building also retains 12th-century frescoes on its walls. Hidden among the narrow streets of the upper town, it belongs to the group of Byzantine monuments recognised for their artistic significance.
