Perched on the upper slopes of the old town within the Ano Poli district, this 14th-century monastery is the only Byzantine monastic foundation in Thessaloniki still active today. Its main church preserves frescoes from the Palaeologan era, and tradition links the site to the Apostle Paul's preaching in the city. The peaceful walled compound includes gardens, a library and a patriarchal research institute. From its terraces visitors gain sweeping views over the tiled rooftops of the old quarter down to the Thermaic Gulf.
