A late 13th or early 14th-century Byzantine church in the northwestern part of Thessaloniki's old town, Saint Catherine is admired for its elegant proportions and richly patterned brickwork. Built on a cross-in-square plan with an ambulatory and multiple domes, it exemplifies the sophisticated architecture of the Palaeologan era. Traces of wall paintings survive inside despite its long use as a mosque under Ottoman rule, when it was known by another name.
