Built in 1444 by Sultan Murad II, the Bey Hamam was the first Ottoman bathhouse in Thessaloniki and one of the most important surviving in the Balkans. Also known as the Baths of Paradise, it comprised separate sections for men and women, each with cold, warm and hot rooms crowned by domes pierced with star-shaped skylights. Marble basins, painted stucco and decorative niches remain within the vaulted chambers. In use for centuries the baths now serve as a monument and cultural venue.
