A compact grid of narrow streets near the port of Thessaloniki, Ladadika takes its name from the oil merchants and warehouses that once filled the district. Its low, colourful buildings survived the great fire of 1917 and were later restored, becoming a protected quarter of taverns, bars and music venues. The cobbled lanes preserve early 20th-century commercial architecture, with iron balconies and painted plaster facades. Once a run-down market area it is now among the liveliest evening destinations in the city.
