Lipscani is the historic core of Bucharest, a network of narrow streets that once hosted the guilds and merchants who traded goods from Leipzig, giving the district its name. After decades of neglect the quarter was restored and now buzzes with cafes, bars, bookshops, and boutiques set in restored nineteenth-century buildings. Landmarks including the Old Princely Court, Stavropoleos Church, and grand former banks stand among the crowds. Cobbled lanes and covered passages make it the liveliest pedestrian zone in the capital.
