Curtea Veche, the Old Princely Court, marks the medieval origin of Bucharest as the residence of Wallachian rulers, including Vlad the Impaler. Excavated ruins reveal thick brick walls, cellars, and paving from the fifteenth-century palace once at the city's core. A bust of Vlad Țepeș stands nearby, and the small adjoining Old Court Church of 1559 is among the oldest surviving in the capital. The surrounding Lipscani quarter grew up around this court and remains the historic commercial heart of the old town.
