Radu Vodă Monastery sits on a low hill above the Dâmbovița river in Bucharest, founded in the late sixteenth century by prince Alexandru II Mircea. Its brick church follows the triconch plan of Wallachian architecture, with a tall belfry and painted interior restored after wars and earthquakes. The monastery played a role in the city's religious and political life and once held a princely tomb. A quiet walled courtyard shelters it from the surrounding streets, offering a calm survivor of old Bucharest near the university district.
