University Square sits at the heart of central Bucharest, ringed by the University of Bucharest, the National Theatre, and the InterContinental tower. It became a symbol of civic protest, first during the 1989 revolution and again in 1990 when demonstrators occupied the plaza for weeks. Four bronze statues of Romanian scholars and rulers stand along the boulevard, and a memorial marks those who died in the uprising. Today the square is a busy crossroads for trams, students, and rallies alike.
