Revolution Square, formerly Palace Square, is where Nicolae Ceaușescu delivered his final speech in December 1989 before the crowd turned against him. The plaza is framed by the former Royal Palace, now the National Museum of Art, and the ex-Central Committee building. A tall white marble spike, the Memorial of Rebirth, commemorates those killed in the revolution and remains a subject of local debate. The square also holds the Kretzulescu Church and the Athenaeum nearby, making it a dense cluster of history.
