Cișmigiu Gardens is the oldest public park in Bucharest, laid out in the 1840s by German landscape architect Carl Meyer around a central lake. Winding paths, a rotunda of writers' busts, and imported trees create a romantic retreat in the middle of the busy centre. In winter the lake freezes for skating, and in summer visitors hire rowboats or rest in shaded pavilions. A small memorial honours French soldiers, and the surrounding streets preserve a leafy, nineteenth-century atmosphere close to the city hall.
