The national opera of Romania performs in a mid-twentieth-century building on the west side of central Bucharest, near the Dâmbovița river. Completed in 1953 in a monumental style, it houses a large auditorium for opera and ballet and a small museum devoted to its history. As the country's leading lyric company, it presents a broad repertoire of opera and classical ballet. A statue of the composer George Enescu stands outside. The theatre anchors the operatic tradition of the capital, complementing the concert life centred on the Athenaeum.
