Chapter I · Tunis Governorate · 21 places

Tunis Governorate

A clifftop village perched above the Gulf of Tunis, defined by whitewashed cubic houses with cobalt-blue doors and window grilles. The village overlooks the ruins of ancient Carthage and the open sea, and has historically attracted European painters and writers drawn by the quality of the light. Narrow stone-paved lanes connect the main square to terraced gardens with panoramic views across the bay. The blue-and-white palette, while now carefully maintained, lends the village an unusually coherent visual identity.

Djerba: Testimony to a settlement pattern in an island territory, Tunisiavia Wikimedia Commons

Chapter II · Medenine Governorate · 8 places

Medenine Governorate

This serial property is a testimony to a settlement pattern that developed on the island of Djerba around the 9th century CE amidst the semi-dry and water-scarce environment. Low‑density was its key characteristic: it involved the division of the island into neighbourhoods, clustered together, that were economically self-sustainable, connected to each other and to the religious and trading places of the island, through a complex network of roads. Resulting from a mixture of environmental, socio-cultural and economic factors, the distinctive human settlement of Djerba demonstrates the way local people adapted their lifestyle to the conditions of their water-scarce natural environment.

Chapter III · Nabeul Governorate · 8 places

Nabeul Governorate

A resort town on the Cap Bon peninsula in northeastern Tunisia, historically known for its whitewashed medina and long sandy beach before large-scale resort development began in the 1960s. The old medina, enclosed within crenellated walls, retains a quiet residential character with jasmine-draped courtyards. The beach stretches for kilometres northward along a gently curving bay with calm, clear Mediterranean water. The town became an early enclave for European artists and intellectuals in the interwar period.

Chapter IV · Béja Governorate · 7 places

Béja Governorate

Before the Roman annexation of Numidia, the town of Thugga, built on an elevated site overlooking a fertile plain, was the capital of an important Libyco-Punic state. It flourished under Roman and Byzantine rule, but declined in the Islamic period. The impressive ruins that are visible today give some idea of the resources of a small Roman town on the fringes of the empire.
